Meteors White Light 1980 reconstructed
Fans of classic horror movies dream of the lost movie 'London After Midnight' being found and psychobilly fans long to see the Meteors first TV appearance on the teatime youth programme White Light. It was first screened on Monday 27 Oct 1980, which was just before home video recorders were widely available. Having followed the band since their first gig in July 1980, I held a mic up to the TV to record the sound on a cassette while my friend Chris Shearwood took black & white photos of the screen. The cassette has deteriorated over the decades so the quality isn't great and the beginning of a very short version of the Phantom's 'Love Me' is cut off.
The TV show was recorded at Teddington Lock TV studio on the afternoon of Thursday 23 Oct. A handful of us went with the band and had fun trying to stand up in the back of the van while singing surfing songs. I wore my Lux Interior inspired undertaker's coat, which Nigel Lewis borrowed when they performed 'Ain't Takin' a Chance'. Another follower Andy can be seen in the photos with his peroxide flat top with the front dyed blue. The band had originally intended to do 'Maniac Rockers From Hell' but that wasn't deemed appropriate for the teatime slot. So Paul Fenech did 'Ain't Takin' a Chance' which he joked was about contraception. The show was presented by James Maw and Olympic decathlon champion Daley Thompson. Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies was also a guest. It's fair to say that our little band of psychos were quite a contrast and Nigel quipped "if Daley Thompson is a jerk, is that what they call a physical jerk?"
In the absence of the actual TV footage, I hope this will be interesting for fans of the Meteors - the original creators of psychobilly. Over 40 years later the Kings of Psychobilly are still out there making new music and delivering the goods live across the world. I was lucky enough to be there at the beginning and still love 'em.

Nigel Lewis from his Meteors period. Home recording from around December 1980. Never before unleashed. Featuring Stewart Rhodes & Chris Shearwood on snare drum & tea-chest bass. But it ain't skiffle! Rough'n'ready but hopefully interesting.

3 years since we lost our best guide to the strange & wonderful, Mr Lux Interior. Still missed by so many, but his influence will never be lost. Love to Ivy, who lost more than us.

The Meteors - My Daddy is a Vampire & Love Me 1981 - live at Feltham Football Club

Poor quality video, it's just dripping with sweat! Nigel Lewis sings 2 of his signature tunes. The gig at Feltham Football Club in west London was in July 1981. The crowd is really the second era of Meteors followers. You'll spot manager Nick Garrard in there showing them the etiquette of psychobilly dancing. If you want to see the orginal Meteor fans check out the 1981 video for Graveyard Stom...

Ray Campi sings Get Rhythm, followed by an interview where the great man talks about rockabilly
I was at Shades every week back then, Fifties Flash RIP.
Brilliant times ....
Also saw myself dancing in that Shades video. Can’t still do that now sadly but love the music still to bits
I was there the night they filmed this!!!
Days end, i recall this scene all too well. Quite a lot has changed since the post caister/ early hemsby days. Certainly 'the scene' threw up many diversifications- be it sub genres, or clothes, however- the mainstay was always the music. The Beat. Flash can be seen here putting on a Japanese Atlantic lp, presumably a bopper; stroller or jiver. Re read them last few sentences. A major change now being the need to play 'orig 45s only' . In my day- the big beat mattered- not the format. A good dancer was a good dancer, regardless of it being on lp, ep, or re issue 45. A whole different argument, which is now pointless to question. Back in the day, the music was sort of underground. It's more mainstream nowadays- however, if i'm paying 20 quid to attend some rockin record hop, and i ask the dj to play (say) Dr Ross: Cat Squirell and he can't play it because he doesn,'t own the original Fortune 45, and refuses to play the Northwood re press, then that's 20 pounds wasted! I don't care what format of the song i'm dancing to. However, the dick jockey does. No original 45? Then don't expect to hear anything remotely rare-(not obscure).. This piffle started with the northern soul scene, and trickled down to the current 'rockin scene'. As Norman Johnson / Showmen sang in 1961:" Some folks don't understand it". I guess i'm one of them! Rave On....
True words. When I started rockin' in '81 it was the music that was important. If it's on an original 45 that's fine but if it's a repro or an album it's the same for me. So much great stuff which was re- issued on White Label, Collector or Bison/Buffalo Bops isn't played anymore because it's not "kool" to play compilation albums when the track you play "only" costs 200 quid as a 45 .... The rockin' scene has changed much in the last five decades, sometimes beyond recognition. Rockin' regards from Southern Germany. Dirk
Looks like a military dressing room. 100% femaleless crowd. Charming.
Wow! Saww myself in that vid...and still rockin' now!
And no one "Bopped" like that back in the 1950s. In fact, what British chose to call "The Stroll" isn't the 1950s Stroll. Its nothing but the Texas Two Step....
yeah seen videos of the AM stroll like the kids are strolling down the tunnel of love
🤘😎🤘 🎼🎵🎶🎸
how many people watching this were trying to find themselves in the crowd ?? lol I know I was..
H the Good old days, Southend on sea, Friday Night, either Crazy Cavan, or The Flaying Saucers, ave a few pints, bounce a few Punk Rockers, then home,... Ready for Saturday Night😂😂👍
That blonde girl was very tidy indeed.
we had a similar sceen here in somerset at the time, we have 50's cars, clothes and music, infact some of us are still doing it and still got 50's cars still.
Thank you for sharing this, I used to hear the name "The Prof " mentioned a lot when I followed the Meteors, you're a bit of a legend amongst those who know, those who remember the early days. I started following The Meteors around April 1981, my friends were old Adam and the Antz fans from 1978/79/80. They started following the Meteors, encouraged me to go along, I stopped when it all got a bit silly around mid 1982. It was great up until then, thank you for sharing this. I used to follow Theatre of Hate as well, they appeared on this show in early 81, I've never been able to find the footage of their appearance either.
Why did it get silly in 82?
I didn't realise this scene was still about in the mid 80s as my area Newcastle it was the Psychobilly and some of them were into the Scooter Scene also other people with Quiffs were Smiths fans.
Thanks for posting, new Paul from the Bobby Sox , great bloke, and great band
No phones no tattoos no pearcings pure fun
Really great bopping IMO from the guy in the blue shirt and jeans from 01.24-01.29.

That was a great place, music incredible
Great times. Remember them well. Did not realise Elaine was only 17 back then
It's my birthday today.
Many thanks to the enthusiast who made this part of the early history of this pioneering band, in this most adventurous way ! Really awesome...
Dude that's awesome!

You the Prof who came up with the Frankie design?
Yep, I did the early Meteors artwork (Zorch head, the Bass player & Paul F badge)
@@RockinProff Nice!! 🤩 Glad to have found you on the web! I just finished reading Mark's new book and was going through UA-cam looking for old shows. Figured you my be the great Prof! You still do art?
I do occasionally pick up my pencil, pens & brushes. There'll be something on the Satellite Baby 45 which Crazy Love are due to put out soon
@@lindzirhodes792 I will definitely keep a lookout! Im a fan of your art for sure. Id love to get my hand on some of your work if you're ever willing to do some commission work! 😃
@@lindzirhodes792 man, that’s cool about the Artwork, maybe I could acquire something from you one day
Well I thought the presenter was Darcey Bussell, but thanks to Kav (who dropped her in pain after she grabbed his tackle), I now know she is Nikki, presenter of the "01 For London" tv show from Thames Television, and is from 1988.
Great info. Thanks !
Certainly is milky,I spot Russel and krazy Kev and maybe Sid.
That's Tommy Vance speaking at the end. He did the Friday Rock Show in the UK. Was this taken from the Friday Rock Show?
I can't recall. Think it was on a Saturday afternoon on Radio 1. Unfortunately I missed the first part before I slapped the tape on
is that milky facing the camera half way through the first song?, looks a lot like him
Only The Cramps are pure psychobilly
Great Stuff. The original Meteors! Does a DVD with the video of the complete gig is available?
yeah ... it was fucking miles to the tube from feltham .....you had to hang around at a shit bus stop....some footage !..hats orfe uploader
Very cool guy!!
I was at this gig , I went to most gigs at FFC , all on a Friday night and I used to drive home pissed in my girlfriend's car. It was a bit violent but then again we were all young lads.
Was that the Camden workers near kentish Town??
BM BM yes
Althone Street Don’t think it’s there any more because, without workers, there is no need for a club.
Knocked down years ago sadly
I dindt count how many times we drove from south Germany to there in a Ford Taunus and a Opel Rekord1.2
